Facebook Users Suck

You can read about some interesting research about the sort of people who use Facebook the most over at the Telegraph. I found the opening paragraph rang especially true for me:

The social networking site is a haven for narcissistic people because they can establish a large number of hollow 'friendships' without having to establish a real relationship, a study found.

Reflects my own thoughts on the subject of all things Facebook quite well. Of course, there's an irony here in that I'm considering starting up a Facebook page again - I want a convenient way to stay in touch with my uncle's widow and their daughters. So, I guess the joke's on me?

  1. I truly do suck, using Facebook to update people on what's going on and being able to coordinate work schedules when there's a surprise absence. I should be drawn and quartered.

The service has come in quite useful for me on a number of occasions. I have coordinated most of my Fredericton trips using it with Josh, and just this past weekend, we arranged a small party for my son with 6-7 couples in a matter of minutes where it would have taken a good couple hours had I had to contact people on the phone.

It's original intent I believe was for college students to have their college experience online as well...or just to figure out where the next beer pong contest was going to be. It has grown substantially since then, and has a myriad of uses, from posting embarrassing photos to ruin career opportunities to letting you 'destroy' 'vampires' and 'mafia lords' and just about everything in between.

Should one use Facebook? Perhaps. Perhaps not. Should I use it? Probably not....Or absolutely. Who knows. But here I go, updating my status and to plant some seeds!

  2. Facebook, Twitter, and all these new forms of social interaction are just the latest version of a growing technology.

I was saying to a guy in the shop last night. Technology can be awesome, but it can also be filled with suck. Books. Books are great. But for every 1 good book out there, there are about 100 or so filled with utter garbage.

Is there are a type of person that uses facebook who fits the telegraphs description? Yes. But to say that all people that use Facebook are like that is a bit unfair.

  3. Well, research - when properly done - doesn't lie. But then, the research doesn't say that everyone who uses Facebook is narcissistic. What it does say is the sort of person who constantly checks it and maintains long lists of "friends" with whom they have little contact and for whom they don't actually care - those sorts of users are narcissistic more often than not. Not coincidentally, those are the sort of Facebook users who use it the most.

Of course, if the article doesn't apply to you, then it doesn't apply to you. If on the other hand it struck a nerve, maybe that says something? Self-reflection is never a bad thing.
